The Playing Fields of SW Virginia

EMATS contributes new playing fields to 2 area high schools. By now you may have seen newspaper articles or heard by word of mouth of our latest endeavor – “The Playing Fields of SW Virginia”. This 501 (c) (3) organization has been established with Jon Bowerbank as its President and COB. It will raise charitable deducible funds to furnish and install new synthetic playing fields at both Honaker and Richlands High Schools. EMATS will lead this initiative by performing the vast majority of the physical work as well as assuming 100% of the responsibility for raising the funds for these projects.

EMATS will also request naming rights to the field and have our logo placed on the field in such a manner as you may have seen on telecasts of college bowl games. Fuller Field @ EMATS Stadium was successfully completed last year and EMATS Field @ Ernie Hicks Stadium will soon become a reality as we begin construction in April 2008.

Richlands Field in Progress

The Richlands High School Football field project is coming together at a quick pace. On Wednesday June 25th a small ceremony was held for the placement of a time capsule. In attendance were members of the Tazewell County School Board, the Mayor of Richlands, and EMATS General Manager Carl “Skip” Hale. Approximately 100 children from Richlands High School, the Richlands Middle and Elementary schools also attended the event. The drainage system has been constructed, and all of the geotextile fabric has been placed. As of Friday June 27th, more than half of the field was graveled with 57’s. It is anticipated that the first lift of stone will be complete early this week. The installation of the artificial turf should begin soon.
